What this map is, and is not
It is a receiver map, not a world map. AIS is a line of sight radio system. What you see here is what two open networks happen to receive: the Norwegian Coastal Administration's feed and Finland's Digitraffic service. A ship crossing the Pacific broadcasts continuously and appears nowhere on this page.
An empty area means no reception, not empty sea. That distinction matters more than it sounds. Absence here is never evidence that a vessel switched off its transponder, and we will not present it as such.
Not every dot has a page. The raw feeds carry an MMSI, which is a radio licence, not a hull. Where we can resolve it to an IMO number the vessel links through to its emissions record; where we cannot, the dot stays grey. Roughly two in five are resolved.
Positions are minutes old, not seconds. The Norwegian feed is polled on a cycle and the Baltic stream is written in batches. Treat the map as a recent picture, not as a control room display. Nothing here is suitable for navigation.
